‘Arry – bottled it?

Anyone else out there gobsmacked by our arry’s decision to turn down the call of the  magpies?

I appreciate the lure of the Sandbanks and the considerations of family life and all but in terms of footballing ambition it strikes me as something of a no brainer.

Pompey consistently punch above their weight but surely aint goin any higher? Newcastle have the potential for much more I would have thought. Any manager who steers them to a top 6 finish and maybe a cup run or two has the potential to become a legend up there it seems to me. What did Harry have to lose??

  • What did harry have to lose..how about if results didnt go right he would be yet another manager out the door at the magpies.

  • headmaster1

granted cdazyhorse but, hey, the dude is 60; this was last chance saloon to achieve something other than keeping pompey top ten – no mean feat admittedly but surely a case of ‘job done’

  • SortAhh

Redknapp was offered mega money my Newcastle.
Gaydamak matched the bid and then beat the offer and also gave him bonuses.
So Redknapp stayed as the offer to stay was in monetary terms idiotic to turn down.

  • he obviously is happy where he is and i wouldnt mind the money he is on now even where he is now.The magpies are in trouble at the moment and that showed with the pasing they got by man utd

  • I understand what you mean headmaster but the chairman at the magpies is too easy to throw out managers, and i dont doubt harry as a manager but at the moment going to newcastle is like holding a red hot poker

I think ‘arry has made exactly the right choice and is more suited to continue the great work at pompey in a happy environment. Newcastle utd fc has always appeared to be a very unhappy club where they demand success but have no idea where to start to achieve it!In actual fact he would have been very good for the bar codes but they would be no good for him so nice one ‘arry.

  • I think what headmaster is trying to say is, To turn down the chance to run what is definitley a future top 6 club, was a bit to stupid to turn down, Newcastle have one of the best fanbase in the country, who are loyal, a lot like us Hammers, Portsmouth, maybe given 10 years or so with a new stadium, might be at the same level as Newcastle.
Big Sam, from the start wasnt the supporters favourite guy to lead there club, but unfairly booted out too soon, but Harry is a likable guy, as we well know, he would have had the backing of the supporters for sure. Its not the bigwigs who decide when its time for a manager to go, its the supporters fury that does that.

I dont usualy agree with headmaster on a lot, but spot on this time.

If you read his biography, you’d know how important his family life (which has been settled in the same place for 30 years) is to him.

Also, Harry is a gambling man when all’s said and done, and he would know that the odds were slight for being allowed a reasonable time to turn Newcastle around.

We’re only just recently recovered from his departure and Pompey have done well in keeping him. IMHO, he’s the best English manager there is (sorry Curbs) and would’ve got the England job if it wasn’t for some of the murkier aspects of his business life.

  • West Ham Fan no 32

Harry knows now the England job has gone and is someone that doesn’t like change all that much, whenever he has left clubs its usually because he’s been forced. So what is there to gain for a man touching 60 to up roots and move from a place he loves. “Newcastle has potential” thats what everyone says, if you are 60 and thinking of taking the job are you ever going to see them realise that potential ?

Was a no brainer to stay, well done Harry, leave the job to someone who has the passion for the club like Keegan or Shearer.

    Hmmmm….not exactly a tough choice

Stay at a club where he is comfortable, already a legend in the eyes of the fans, has a team that are becoming established in the top half of the prem, having steadily built a good balance over the last few seasons, a team that have a realistic chance of challenging for UEFA qualification in the next 2 or 3 seasons with only a minor improvement, on the sunny south coast where ‘arry feels his spiritual home is

Or, move to the cold grim north, to a team who will struggle to keep pace with Pompey until a total clearout allows them to pretty much start from scratch. Yet a team who have ridiculously high over-expectations, with a crowd who are only going to be won over when those ridiculously high expectations are met. For a club who have shown, with their sacking of Fat Sam, that if you can’t start instantly producing quality football, and results, with a team of disorganised donkeys, you’re on a hiding to nothing

    I can’t see why ‘arry wouldn’t be interested………

What London lad in his right mind would want to go and work for all those northern muppets? I mean…you wouldn’t be able to understand a word they are saying…

Then a couple of losses on the trot and they would be shouting about the sacking the cockney. They live in a dream world. “We are a big club!!” Rubbish. West Ham have won a lot more than them in the last 50 years…do we continually harp on about how much we deserve to be treated like a top four.

They have had 11 managers in 11 years I think. Why walk into a job like that. They even sacked a legend of their own….Robson.

I like Harry and I would hate to see him treated like shite up there by a bunch of bar codes who don’t deserve him.

Good on yer ‘arry for staying where you are. Keep working with Pompey and I wish you success …..and let the northern muppets dream on.

Or just let them have Glenn Roeder back….!
