The Unluckiest Loan in West Ham History?

There have been some pretty bad transfers in recent history within the CCC and English football in general. Names like Ali Dia of Southampton stick out, among others, but what about bad loan spells for the players themselves, rather than the clubs?I think Calum Davenport can lay claim to quite possibly the worst loan spell EVER this past week, by turning out for Watford for a grand total of 40 minutes before breaking his neck.

Yes, you read correctly, BREAKING HIS NECK. The West Ham defender was drafted in to provide cover for Danny Shittu, currently on duty with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations. After Hornets teammate Darius Henderson fell on top of him 40 minutes into the first half of Saturday’s match with Charlton, he went off with a fractured neck bone.

Watford skipped Aidy Boothroyd had this to say: “Calum heard a crack in his neck and he lost the sensation in his fingers.” YIKES.

From the BBC: “The injury has triggered an immediate end to the 25 year old’s loan spell and he will return to the Hammers.”

Which pretty much seals the worst-loan-spell-ever Award for Mr. Davenport.

The only danger is if they send us to that horrible Planet of the Apes. Wait a minute… Statue of Liberty… that was our planet! You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to hell!

Feel very sorry for Calum. To date he has not really fulfilled the potential that I think many of us saw in him 2-3 years ago. It seems like when your luck’s down, it really is down.
When you consider Dyer’s horrendous injury against Coventry it does look as though the footballing Gods are not smiling upon us this year.
I can think of one or two clubs’ supporters who might view this is divine intervention!!

i didnt had anything smart to say so i just quoted homer ;) davenport is lost cause for west ham. he is good for some champions league club but not for a team who wants to go to europe, we should offload him as soon as possible along with quashie.

Bora, I think you mixed up the term ‘Champions league’ with Championship’ ?

Davenport is still a young inexperienced Centre Half, who don’t usually mature into their position until close to 30. Give him time, going to Watford was a good move, unfortunate outcome.

As far as worst signing, Mauriccio Taricco has to be one of the most unfortunate pieces of luck ever?
