MLS All Stars Fans Dissapointed its West Ham

After finding out a few months ago, that West Ham was going to Canada to play what i thought was the Vancouver Whitecaps, it now seems i was wrong about the Team but right about the Country.

So i decided after reading some good articles about our little tour to Canada, to play the MLS All Stars, i would find out what the fans of the MLS had to say about West Ham going to play their All Stars. Click Here for to find out

Personally, i believe we should be playing European teams and building tactical knowledge from that, and i dare say, poor old Curbs does not have any say in this senseless visit to Canada.

This is an Example of one of the MLS Fans Comments:-

MLS FANS WEBSITE

Comments

Yawn. Weak.

lets say that i not impressed with this team… the long standing rumour was that it was going to be liverpool and to get westham instead doesn;t really get the juices flowing …

Check out here what the MLS Fans had to say about West Ham being chosen to play the MLS All Stars and leave a message on how you feel.

Did we expect the Americans and Canadians to know who we were? Probably not. But isn’t that part of the reason we’re going out there - to spread the name of our great club?
Good idea in my opinion - they won’t know what’s hit ‘em!

Scott, i agree with West Ham gaining an International name and reputation, and that is what we are working to do, What i am saying is, that it is a waste of time for WHU going to the states, we need to be touring Europe, gaining experience against European teams, and maybe 1 day when the mighty All Stars are in the class and experience of the EPL and Europe, maybe we should give them a tour.
And lets be honest, the MLS fans haven’t got an Idea about the history of football, West Ham is enriched in tradition, it even has the greatest Academy in the world, but like i said, to the Yanks, its just Show time.. yeeehaaa it has nothing to do with tradition and football, if i was the MLS governors i would go back to playing MLS East v MLS West.

To Scott and Rooster, I think you need to learn a little more about your Commonwealth cousins before you start commenting on our knowledge of the game.

Let’s start with the fact that I’m a 32 year old Canadian who’s been following the beautiful game since Italy won the WC in ‘82. My father, an Italian immigrant, introduced me to the love of my life on that day. There are hundreds of thousands of us over here with similar stories. We’re a nation comprised of hundreds of ethnic backgrounds with strong ties to the greatest game on earth. Brazilians, Argentines, Italians, Germans, and yes, even the English all have representation over here. Let’s also address the fact that Canadians were playing the game as early as 1876 and have a gold medal to show for it. Granted, we haven’t done very much since then but that doesn’t in any way diminish our love for the game.

My mother’s side of the family is Irish. I have ties to England because her sister (my aunt) married an Englishman. One of my cousins is a diehard Watford supporter (the poor lad). The other married an Evertonian, a team that I felt most connected to after watching my first Merseyside Derby about 3 years ago. From there my English allegiance was to the Toffees. Why do I bring this up? Well, I feel it’s important for you to understand that the Premiership has a tremendous following on these shores and yes, even the woeful Hammers have legions of supporters here too. I would even venture a guess and say that our television coverage is greater than the vast majority of European nations’. On any given day, I’ll have coverage of just about every league in both Europe and South America. In fact I watched Barnsley knock both the red bastards and Chelsea out of the FA cup. Bundesliga, Serie A, BPL, League Championship, Ligue 1, La Liga; you name it I can watch it. Anyway, I digress.

Which brings me to my final point: being from Toronto, I support Toronto FC in the fledgling MLS and yes I do so with such fervour that I dare anyone to question that loyalty. The All-Star Game is a match designed to test the mettle of the very best in MLS against a quality European squad. In the past, Celtic and Chelsea have provided that competition; both games won by us. Granted both teams were in pre-season shape and were understandably at a bit of a disadvantage. For the 2008 season, the assumption was that we’d be introduced to a higher calibre of opponent. Yes; a higher calibre. I’m addressing you as an Evertonian supporter now. To reply to Scott’s first comment, I know exactly who the Hammers are and you’re a smidgen above shite and barely mid table so for God’s sake, be realistic now. Don’t hide behind the claim that “the Canadians don’t know their football” because it’s a damn copout. In fact, save yourself the trouble of coming to Liverpool and mail us the three points next week will you? Now I know West Ham is steeped in tradition and despite my commentary I do hold your club in high regard. Understand this however; we know the history of football as much any Englishman and we don’t require your approval to enjoy it.

In having said all of that however, thank you for bringing this game to the world.

By the way, we’re Canucks, not Yanks.

    Regards,

    Domenic

Domenic: first of all, it would have been criminal of me not to allow your comment to go through, after the effort you put into it.

The article is about how much disrespect the North Americans have with West Ham, read my earlier comments on this post.
And i also understand that a majority on North Americans have very little knowledge about any team other than the so called top 4.
West Ham are 10th in the most influential league in the world.
I have to admit, i actually cant wait for us to play the MLS All Stars now, so all this banter has made the game more interesting.

With regards to the increased profile of the all-star game, I couldn’t agree with you more. I completely understand your position as well. If the roles were reversed, I’d feel the same way. But you’re dead wrong about the majority of North Americans having very little knowledge of the rest of the table. Last year Toronto FC played Aston Villa in a friendly and the sold out game (as per usual) featured thousands of Villa fans; some were even wearing their TFC scarves over Villa jerseys. In my office alone I have to contend with both Spurs and Fulham supporters. I never thought I’d hear the end of it after the Spurs beat Chelsea btw. Carling Cup…unbelievable. Anyway, my point is, a lot of our contempt for West Ham isn’t due to our lack of knowledge, but rather your position in your own league. I’m not trying to ridicule or insult you in any way, but the truth of the matter is that when West Ham pays a visit to Goodison or Stamford Bridge or Anfield (really had to swallow hard on that one) chances are, three points aren’t coming your way. If you were top four, then perhaps attitudes over here would change regarding you as opposition. But please understand that our displeasure doesn’t have its roots in ignorance, but rather in our knowledge of the premiership and its teams. Now I know that comes across as being extremely arrogant coming from a league where Derby could in effect, win it all but that’s the reality of the situation. Look, at least we both agree; this game certainly has some controversy surrounding it and sometimes controversy breeds competition.

I for one, can’t wait! I’ll be there as always dawning the red and white and cheering on our side. I hope you’ll be there too.

    Good luck to you all!

    Cheers Hammer fans!

Just a Chicago Fire fan here wanting to apologize for being shortsighted in my comments on some of our MLS blogs about West Ham facing our boys this summer. I guess I was one who jumped to conclusions before really loking at what the matchup is.

I will admit that I had no idea what football tradition your club has and I can truly say I am now looking forward to the matchup. I apologize if anyone who supports West Ham took offense to my comments and please try to make an effort to go to Toronto for the match. When Chicago hosted Chelsea there were at least 500-700 blue fans in our visiting section and it really added to the atomosphere at the match. And we beat Chelsea which I’m sure you all enjoyed!!!

By the way if any Hammers fans are in Chicago try to drop by Toyota park for some MLS action. While I’ll admit our league is not the EPL or even close, but we do play some good football and the FIRE are set to win a title this year!

    Domenic & Gilly73
This is what Football (Soccer) is all about, friendly banter and a few insults thrown in, some of my best mates are yids, and when we are out, we have some great times with the banter.
But please guys, West Ham is a club that has entertained some of the poorest people in Britain for over a hundred years and some of the hardest too, forget the top 4, i dread the day West Ham becomes so good that they never lose a game and win the league every year and the champions league, that would be so boring, you have to lose sometimes to get the thrill when you win, and that is why we love this club so much, we do actually bleed claret and blue, and the term the fans use ” West Ham till i die” is very true, i buried my own son, and his coffin draped with a West Ham Flag.
I accept your apologies, but West Ham will still beat the all stars. :)

    Domenic,

I’ve got a great idea. Why don’t you stay at home? My brother and I are planning to cross Canada to see the legendary hammers play. I’m driving in from Vancouver, it’ll be only slightly cheaper than flying to Upton Park. (that’s where West Ham play, by the way) Let’s get this straight. You support Toronto FC, and they’re not even halfway up their own table. You should be thankful that any prem team would even bother. And if Toronto FC put in half the effort that you did when you desperately tried to prove your footie pedigree, you might have a team. Until then, Its West Ham till I die.

“Let’s start with the fact” that I’m a 38 yr old Chicagoan who saw The Chicago Sting win a Championship (See above). That said, are you serious? MLS fans complaining over the competition for the (and I’m saying this without laughing somehow) MLS all-star game? You should be thankful West Ham or ANY EPL team agree to acknowledge that league. I’ve tried to watch it… molasses is faster, and more entertaining. What about Fulham and Celtic? They were just fine as I can remember. I think West Ham are at least so much more than a lateral move here. I’m so tired of small minded dopes unsatisfied with anything other than the dopey “big 4″, or the obvious Madrid/Milan, which MLS probably can’t afford anyhow. If MLS goes to East V West, the rest of the world will continue to ignore MLS. Uggggghh. Take what you can get for a fledgling league. A healthy West Ham side actually would be quite formidable. But I wouldn’t expect most to know anything other than Man U, Chelsea, etc…

    Dominic

You never know, reaching 33 might see you lose some of that arrogance, pal. So, to sum it up, you’ve been an Everton supporter since 1982 (when you were six, wow!); you consider West Ham are ‘a smidgen above shite’ because of their position in the Premier League but ‘I’m not trying to ridicule or insult you in any way’. Really?

It must have been tough for you some of the years between 1982 & 2008, when Everton trailed in the bottom half of the old First Division, now the Premiership? Actually, that would have been the equivalent of being shite, or a smidgen below shite, wouldn’t it? It’s very easy dishing the pompous comments out when you’re sitting 5th in the league. Make the most of it as it’s been a rarity for Everton over previous years.

As for not bothering to turn up at Goodison next Saturday, well unlike you I will be there and will be meeting a few of your older lot there for a drink. One thing I can guarantee is that they would class you as a Grade A dick.

Finally, seeing as you also obviously think you have the ability to speak for all football fans in North America, please let me reciprocate on our behalf. Don’t think you’re any more disappointed than us, as most of us would rather have had a pre-season in Europe where at least the supporters have first hand experience of watching a decent standard of football live.

As I said in an earlier post, Can’t we all get along?
As a Gooner, I personally would have loved to see a Big Four team, but we take what we can get. I know Hammers would have loved to go to China or India or elsewhere in Asia like the big clubs have, but again you take what you can get. Probably alot of money was thrown at WHU and they took it (because they needed it to pay the huge fine for the Tevez debacle). To the Hammers, I say Welcome to Toronto, enjoy your stay, and Go TFC!!

    April 18th, 2008 at 8:21 PM

    Canadian Hammer,

Maybe you haven’t read the press release, but TFC isn’t playing in the All Star Game. Yes; Toronto had a poor season but maybe you’re not aware of the fact that this was their inaugural season. That means that they’d never played until 2007. What kind of a club would anyone field under those circumstances? Regardless, I still enjoyed myself and our support but I’m not here to argue the futility of our first season on the pitch.

By the way, I was simply providing you with some background, that’s all. People were commenting on North American ignorance when it came to the game and I, in a very long winded way, said, “nah, you’re wrong,” that’s all. And, there is no “might”. I do have a team. Now on to Steve-O.

  15. yu119995
    April 18th, 2008 at 8:47 PM

Relax Steve-O. I’m not here to piss on West Ham or its supporters. Someone said something about “typical North Americans blah blah blah” and I saw it differently. That’s all. If you want to compare Everton to West Ham, by all means; knock yourself out. You and I both know who comes out the winner. ‘84-’87 were great years in fact. ;)

This is my favourite paragraph by the way:

“As for not bothering to turn up at Goodison next Saturday, well unlike you I will be there and will be meeting a few of your older lot there for a drink. One thing I can guarantee is that they would class you as a Grade A dick.”

    Classic.

Anyway, I think the majority of my comments have been misunderstood. I’m not disappointed about playing West Ham at all; I simply explained to you why others might be. My comment clearly stated that I couldn’t wait for the game and that’s the truth.

    It’s been fun.
