English Architects to Design new West Ham Stadium (link)

Allan Cotterel Practice Ltd will be the Architects to design the new West Ham Stadium according to CEO Scott Duxbury, The same Architects that Redesigned Reading FC’s Stadium.

The stadium will initially be made to seat 50,000, but with the option of extending it to 60,000.

Scott Duxbury admitted

“It is not that we don’t think we can fill 60,000 seats, but the last thing we want is empty seats. We are confident that we will be able to fill a 50,000 capacity stadium.”

Plans to build the Stadium at the old Parcel Force ground has hit some problems due to the Gas Holders, Scott said

“We could build a stadium on the site with the gas holders there, but that would curtail what we want to do in terms of a hotel and a leisure complex.

“There is also a bus depot being looked at for the site, but obviously the more of the site we can get, the better.”

I’m sure there must be some way to add another 16,000 seats to Upton park!
Would it be better to just convert Upton Park to a 50,000 stadium as Newcastle did or would you prefer a new Stadium?

i’d prefer going to 60,000 even if there were empty seats. surely for some of the quieter games you can devote the nosebleed seats to the kids for a quid scheme or something similar to build a good fan base for the future. there are plenty of potential supporters out there who would love to go or get a season ticket now but don’t bother because of the waiting lists etc. remember, the planned success forecast for the club will also attract a bigger support.

Just disappointed it wont be out towards Essex so that fans dont have to fight their way in to what will still be a very small station, or through small congested London roads when they could have gone for something further east.

That is after all where the majority of Hammers fans now live. Green St is buzzing every Saturday but the locals are not heading for the stadium….

I have to agree with Marleen, i would prefer a 60k stadium, how easy going to be to change it from 50 to 60k, will that takes months or years? or will it be like an umbrella tyoe stadium like the olympic stadium.
I am glad its an english architect, sombody that knows this land and the people in it, and looking at how well they redesigned reading, we should get a sturdy stadium.
Jonnyhammer: its not 100% at the parcelforce site yet, and maybe the new stadium will be built more towards essex, as land around the olympics will be bloody expensive.

Johnny you would be surprised at how many travel to West Ham from the West and how many season ticket holders there are out here. I get on the train at Woking and there are as many hammers on the train as there are Chelski Spuds and Gooners did you know there are a few designated West Ham pubs around the area as well. Its a bad enough journey for us at the best of times at the moment moving further East would be a nightmare so if it moves to West Ham we wont complain.

We should definitley move to a new stadium, its a nightmare getting home after the game heading towards the ferry and then down to kent, at least if the stadium is near stratford international i can get the shuttle and be ther in 20 mins and home in 30 mins

I’m not very impressed with the works already carried out by the architects. They dont exactly have a top quality portfolio. Most of their sports facilties are based around the Mad Jetski Stadium and Molieux (which happens to be in their home town)

West Ham should be looking to the company that built the Emirates – On Time, On Budget and without doubt, the best stadium in the country.

50,000 sounds just about right, if they get decent structural engineers involved it wont be a problem to increase the size, at least we’ll still have an atmosphere. I would hope that the scheme would also encourage a better entrance to West Ham Station & pubs within the complex. I would have like us to have gone for HOK architects with Emirates Stadium & Ascot both in on time and within budget we don’t want a Wembley!

  • I’D LIKE YO STAY AT THE BOLEYN IF THEY CAN MAKE IT BIGGER.

  • they cant make it bigger …end of,unless u want the fans to be called sardines.ffs lets just accept times are changing and we have to.we can still keep our traditions of good fans, but thats up to us

I think they will make a big mistake if they make it 50,000 with option up to 60,000. Start with 60,000 upwards which we would fill comfortably initially, with a real option for larger capacity for future success, after all BG is aiming for just this isn’t he???

  • ironross

for the information of whoever said we should have the same architects as the emirates..

HOK sport also designed wembley stadium among lots of other places..

anyway, my point being: its not the architects that bring it in on time..

but i do agree, their stuff hardly seems contemporary, let alone innovative.. the madjeski is standard

Well, it seems that they are having cold feet building 60,000+ stadium. I do understand why they want to scale down thou i was hoping for new stadium smilier too Allianz Arena(66,000).
However if they are looking for 50,000 to 55,000 stadium i would suggest smilier to Athletic Bilbao, new stadium Nuevo San Mamés(2010)cost around 200 million euros. It is modeled after Allianz Arena but smaller.
