Champions Aston Villa and West Ham to set HKFC showpiece alight
In The Standard on Friday
Defending champions Aston Villa will head an impressive line-up at next month’s HKFC Philips Lighting International Soccer Sevens.
Villa will be joined by English Premier League rivals West Ham and Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic at Hong Kong Football Club from May 23 to 25.
In yesterday’s draw Villa were placed in Pool C with Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven and Hong Kong teams Bulova Rangers and Yau Yee Select.
West Ham were drawn in Pool A where their main challengers are expected to be reigning Asian club champions and 2006 Soccer Sevens winners Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan.
Celtic are top seeds in Pool B and face a strong challenge from Australia’s Under-20 team.
Rangers are in Pool D together with local side Happy Valley.
In the Masters competition, Rangers All Stars will feature some of the players who helped the club win nine Scottish League titles in a row from 1989, including Gordon Durie, Mark Walters, Ian Ferguson, John Brown and Andy Goram. They have been drawn in Pool D with Marseille All Stars.
The Barclays Wealth All Stars, with Peter Beardsley and former England colleagues Dave Beasant and Warren Barton, will be favorites to top Pool A.
