Six-plus-Five rule: Good or Bad? Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham, Tottenham, Man City, Newcastle

30 May 2008 0 views 22 Comments

Football’s world governing body have voted in favour of the ’six-plus-five rule’, which would put a limit on the number of foreign players each team could field.

The rule would limit every team to only five foreign players in their starting XI.

Blatter has pointed to the Premier League’s dominance in this season’s Champions League as an example of why his organisation must implement the idea, despite legal concerns from the European Union (EU).

Above extracts from the Guardian

Would this rule damage the English Premier League as being the Worlds greatest League?

Would this rule make the Premier League a fairer league for the 16 clubs who never reach Champions League

Would this rule damage the income that the Premier League receive for TV Rights, Sponsors etc etc?

Great article which is pretty well informed. The only thing it doesn’t cater to are EU employment laws which prevent players from EU countries (or holding EU passports…) from playing in other EU countries. We’re already seeing the fruits of this - players from South America being bought by Premiership clubs and farmed out to Spain until they have their EU passport and can play here without a work permit. Carlos Vela is the latest example.Whatever ‘quotas’ Blatter puts in place will never negotiate EU trade laws without compromising them - something that will never be allowed. Clubs like Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea with ties to clubs in countries with trade ties outside the EU (Belgium - former African / Asian colonies, France - the same, Spain - former S American colonies) will continue to play the EU passport game same as they are now.It is an inevitability and in order to compete clubs like West Ham need to forge similar ties.

another aspect which many are not taking into account is the monetary.should the likes of cristiano ronaldo, drogba, cesc, torres etc you can be sure that the global fascination with the prem with decrease. afterall many asians fan went to watch man utd just to see becks.Reduce viewership also means reduce television fees which will have a direct impact on all club in the prem. particularly the smaller club which now earn a lot of money on the back of the likes of arsenal, man utd international popularity.

As a west ham fan would be quite funny, seeing as our average was 5.5 players, at the top. Arsenal 0.5, lets see wenger have to buy english as we all know he doesnt like to!
This aside FAT BATTER cant enforce and wont be able to enforce it, not going to happen, just anothe rexample of FAT BATTER thinking that he runs the world.
This is because the man cant swallow the all english CLF! Bad luck fatty!! u aint gonna change this.

Hi Couple of points about this. The 6 + 5 rule is supposed to help young players coming through and the national team develop. So how will it help all those young Irish, Australian, Welsh players etc? They will have to play in their local leagues and exactly how will that improve them or their national teams. In England Man u, Chelsea and Liverpool will spend £billions buying up the top 100 or so English players and the rest of us will be left with what? And Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, etc will still be playing in the England team!!!!!!!This is a con trick, to damage the power and influence of the EPL and to ensure that the Italians and Spanish go back to winning the Champions League.

Who made Blatter ruler of the world.  Every year he comes up with some hairbrained idea mainly aimed at disrupting UK football.  Surely it is time he was put down and replaced with somebody with a modicum of common sense, but please don’t sugest his Mini Me Michel Platini.

As a West Ham fan, you should be terrified. Players like Green would suddenly become extremely valuable and, while you’d get a good price by selling them, the only players availalbe to you would be championship/lower Prem players.

    Bad for arsenal ha ha!

It does seem that Blatter is out to take away the world stage from English football, It definitely will damage English clubs financially,  the clubs who breed quality English youngsters will prosper and more than likely sell to larger clubs but because of that, they will not reach that top 4 spot. Catch 22 situation

  • enki said:

if this become a reality teams like west ham, boro, spurs, man city etc will lose all their best english players to the top 4. so that will mean an even less competitive prem. spain, italy, france, germany and holland are better off as they produce much more high quality footballer.

Another interesting question is why is the notoriously anti-English Blatter pushing this so enthusiastically? Why is it only a problem when English teams provide 3/4 semi finalists? For me, this comes about because the English league is a better product (not my opinion -sales figures always showed this to be the case) and able to attract more world-wide TV sales, shirt sales etc. It is, of course, also more professionally promoted than its counterparts in other countries. This law would be anti-competitive IMHO, and I can’t see the EU sanctioning it. As far as Blatter is concerned this is a case of ‘bring them down to our level’ instead of taking actions to make the others more competitive, which is surely what a body governing the sport should do?Please don’t respond with subjective opinions on whether the EPL really is better than other leagues. Its an argument that I only get drawn into after the second beer and irrelevant to my point.

I agree with Tuckshop, i would rather my Team, West Ham United slowly but surely reached new heights each season, as should all clubs in Europe who want to reach the heights  and success of the dominating clubs at present.

Its like life itself, You have to work hard for what you want out of life.

Yeah it would obviously be bad for Arsenal but we have enough talent in the reserves to plug a few gaps.Personally I think it would be detrimental to the England squad as english players woulnd’t have to work as hard to get into a club.Wenger has always bought with care and vlaue for money in mind. we could easily have attained the achievements that we have already gained if we had bought British instead of foreign. But we would be as deep in debt as Manure United are.Fuck Sepp & fuck Fifa, this law will never be passed as the EU will block it, but if it goes ahead every fucking union in the UK will be crying out fo a similar policy to stop foreigners taking their jobs. There’s no way it will happen

  • scottygooner said:

jimbo yiddoYour team has been populated “promising english talent ” for years and you’ve still won fu#k all! Why make the league weaker by filling it with English dross. If they were good enough they would be in the team, simple as that! Scottish ffotball has had home grown players in iot for decades and the national team is still pish… Blatter, get a grip

  • JakeGooner said:

All of you spouting your anti-arsenal (boring) no english argument are forgetting that we have one of the (if not the) best accademies for developing and bringing through english talent - it’s everyone else that will suffer as we just wont sell them to you lower teams, keeping them for ourselves

  • jacko said:

Arsenal dont develope any English Talent! The only player you have brought through and developed is asley cole. The likes of Bentley and Upson have been developed away from Arsenal. West Ham have basically supplied the England national team and players for the Champions league final. If i am wrong Jakegooner let me Know?

SamC makes an interesting point. With the implementation of the 6+5 rule, English players would become a much more valuable commodity. How many Premier League teams would be able to afford the inflated prices top-quality English talent required to compete in the Champions League? As the recent financial table shows there are perhaps five (with top four and…I can’t believe I have to admit this…Spurs) who have the clout to attract and finance these transfers. It will, in fact, GROW the distance between the top sides and ‘the rest’ instead of narrowing it. Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs are already renowned for their ability to attract and retain the best young players - regardless of nationality - and that’s of interest should the more likely UEFA proposal come through. They will have sufficient ‘home-grown’ players to provide the backbone to their squads - can the likes of Fulham, Portsmouth, et al say the same? The current transfer market allows those on a limited budget to plunder the foreign market to acquire talent needed to compete for a UEFA spot if not a Champions League spot. What in fact would change with the 6+5 rule? This move, despite Blatters view, will maintain the status quo in the premiership but weaken us in European competition.

its not so bad 4 arsenal wenger only hasa 2 look at enghland u12’s to get good english players like young, hart, abonlahor

  • scottygooner said:

Jacko, west ham developed them then cashed in, the money they made must run into the triple figures. Your right that the majority were from west ham but lets be honest, west ham got relegated and Man utd, Chelsea and the scum raped the club for all their talent. Why Arsenal should be singled out for not developing english players when there is not 1 team (including west ham) that can play a full starting 11 with decent english talent. Simple fact, if they were good enough, they would get picked. Do not turn this league into a shit league

  • JakeGooner said:

    Jacko - you are wrong

  • JakeGooner said:

Look at the likes of Jack Wilshere, lansbury, gavin hoyte, randall etc - that’s only the start - Trevor Brooking has made special mention to the arsenal accademy for the level of our youth system. Only now is the football principles wenger has installed at our club started to come through in the developed youth system

Jimboyiddo, you are a silly bitter. No thought as to the effect on Spurs, but as usual only concentrating on what you think will be an affect on Arsenal. Though of course, it won’t.

  • jacko said:

These arsenal players are not yet developed and havent played in the premiership. Its a bit hasty to say that arsenal have developed great english players…If they were they’d be playing!
