Snakes and Ladders - West Ham and Success

We at West Ham do not live in the same fantasy world as Tottenham & Newcastle but we do have the same desires.

I would be very interested in readers views on how you believe West Ham could achieve a successful future.

In the past with Terence Brown we sold our quality youth players for peanuts instead of reaping the benefits of success and then be financially rewarded in the years of their service to come, now we have Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, will he be a better owner?. We need a bigger Stadium or renovation to The Boleyn Ground, and then again be financially rewarded with a bigger crowd capacity of 50,000 fans, and i know this annoys many readers but we do need to bring in a more experienced Manager and assistants, we now have better training facilities and training grounds.

Let me hear your view? if you have one.

i don’t think we need an more experience manager we just need a new one some one with a personality and charisma and something to say than a load of sh*t we already know

As you know from articles I have written, I 100% agree with the comment about the manager and his assistants. But only based on what we saw from them last year. I am a believer that we need to give them a period of time this coming season with a fully fit squad so they have a chance to prove us wrong. Stability is so important and I think chopping and changing the manager rocks the boat a little too much and doing it before the season begins or only a few games in may not be particuarly beneficial.

In terms of the stand, lets make sure that fans have a reason to fill it before we go and do what Southampton did…get a lovely new ground and then get relegated.

I would say that the fact that the Dr Martens stand was opened the year we got relegated is no coincidence. Obviously we had Roeder in charge which never really helps any cause!

All things considered, i definitely think we have potential with the team as it is. A few changes like bringing in some younger prospects could see us begin to fulfil what I think the team is capable of.

But this is West Ham, so you never really know!

I do think though that Curbs needs to get the team playing football that represents what west ham are about.

He wasn’t doing that last year and I don’t think he has it in him to do it this year

Like i said, hopefully he can prove us wrong!

    We will see

Sam H , spot on mate. curbs had half a season and kept us up then had a full season and finished 10th with our B team. let him have what he never had at Charlton, some money to back him a decent squad and some support from the fans. to be honest i think he knows he isnt loved at west ham but all in all i do think he knows what he is doing, and he is never going to get a better platform than this year ever in his career, cos if he cocks it up he will be sacked, and if he under acheives like last year he will be sacked. if we can do the gooners home and away the mancs home and away plus some other impressive away days then we should go the next step and stop being a push over for mediocre teams like wigan man city and spurs.

    Lets get realistic about Curbs.
Yes I agree the football being played last season wasn’t great. But we did finish 10th (over Spurs) and after the previous season that was a major improvement.

Curbs deserves alot of credit for whats been achieved at West Ham. He helped keep us up, got rid of some Big Time Charlies at the club (NRC) and has bought in some decent players.

With a full strength squad I think we’ll be challenging for a top 6 spot. But realistically we’ll never compete with United, Arsenal, Liverpool.

    Hi all,

Interesting thread, same old rubbish though! I would really like a manager that gave me the football I think I remembered from yesteryear. However, you know what, yesteryear was not as good as we remember even with the holy trinity and football is a very different game!

Unfortunately the more I listen to the bleating of our fans the more I believe we want to be more like other fans in other clubs, with a wish list of things we want. If we become successful it will not be through chopping and changing managers, getting a bigger stadium, spending heavily in the transfer market, this is not the west ham way.

AC may not be the most dynamic of managers but everyone needs time to settle and perform. How long did it take you to settle into your job and perform to the highest standard? I think it is shameful the way we have treated AC (and some of our own players!) and if I was a player looking for a new club I’m not sure west ham would be very high on my wish list. Come on you lot, we finished 10th for christ sake above s***s without our full compliment of top liners! Is that that bad?

What I want to see next season are following:

AC still in charge demonstrating that he has grown into the job successfully

AC getting the respect he rightly deserves

Less b******s from our great supporters

    No booing of whoever

    Winning football entertaining or not

A better than 10th finish to the season

    Youngsters getting a chance

If I see some of these things then I believe we will have made progress.

I think it is really difficult managing a football club. Those of you that are managers at work know how difficult it is to manage a team of people. Give the guy a chance. He may just come good.

Let’s face it, Curbs just isn’t an inspiring individial let alone an inspirational Manager. So even if we do achieve more success next season (e.g. top 6) he’s never going to be the sparky and charismatic character that a lot of WH fans want. He’s on a bit of a hiding to nothing on that score.

In my opinion though and I’m in agreement with what’s been said above… he’s never really had the chance to field his first team for a sustained period which has affected both our results and our style of play. He was unfortunate that not only did we have so many players injured but a lot of them where the key ‘flair’ players that could have provided more entertainment, players like Bellamy, Dyer, Faubert, Ashton etc.

I say he deserves at least until Xmas to get his team producing results and equally as important, getting the team playing better football. That’s what WH is all about and that’s what the fans will always insist upon.

We’re used to the ups and downs of losing games etc. but thats always been offset by the fact that we always try to play good football. If you take that away you’ve just a team that play boring football AND lose.

I say give him a chance, he deserves one. Not convinced he’ll deliver though…

I think Curbs deserves some credit at least! He kept us up with one massive escape after everyone assumed we were going down and he managed to get us in the top half of the table.
After avoiding relegation, I think our fans expect too much too soon. Building a squad doesn’t happen over night.
Curbs couldn’t get us playing West Ham style last season because of all the injuries - so to be fair, Curbs has done a great job up until now.
Hopefully if we have a fit squad, we will be aiming higher this season. Give Curbs a chance - he deserves it.

who cares if AC isn”t dynamic and charasmatic as long as he does a good job and gets us to where we wantto be next season.I dont remember the late great Ron greenwood or john llyal ever being classed as charasmatic but didnt we have some memorable times with them
