UEFA Cup to be Renamed!

The chairman of the European Clubs Association, Karl Heinz Rummenigge, has revealed that the UEFA Cup could be set for a rebranding; to ‘refresh’ the appeal of a tournament that has failed to live up to the expectations of 10 to 15 years ago.

Rummenigge said:

“The hope is that a refreshment of the name and brand can help achieve better results than we’ve seen in the Uefa Cup in the past.

“There has been a general impression that it has become a second-class competition and that we should get back to how it was ten or 15 years ago.”

It is a second class competition. If it was first class it would be called Champions League.

Except for the fact the Champions League isnt full of champions, although yes it is the “first class” competition.

Saying that as a Pompey fan I dont mind them rebranding it after this season, then at least we can claim we’ve been in 2 European competitions, the UFEA Cup and whatever they rename it to :-)

It is a 2nd class competition. You get in it for not being quite good enough for the champs league. A re brand wont change that fact

The Champions League should host all the “champions” of Europe (as the name suggests) and the UEFA cup can host the others, with a bigger appeal. Not so second class witht he likes liverpool, chelsea, spurs and the gooners…a milan or two, barca..etc….

I know this won’t happen b/c the C’league brings in too much money..but it would be better for the game since as it is..clubs are losing out and falling further and further behind as each passes without ever reaching the ever exclusive C’league.

sod changing the name, get more prize money for the competition, and you might get somewhere, changing the name wont do it.

How about, when teams get knocked out of the Champions League they pack their passports away and don’t then get entered into the UEFA! That rule alone devalues the competition. Unless the plan is to call it the ‘Champion League drop-outs cup’!

Name change will not help it as its full of the clubs that don’t make the top 2-4 places in their domestic leagues and will always be looked on as 2nd to the CL.
Trouble is in some leagues some of the top 3 teams would not even compete in other leagues shows the flaws in the system. Mind you its done to share the money around the different countries.
Also remember why the CL was setup in the first place to stop the so called G14 breaking away and having a superleague which would have damaged the grass routes in every country.
Uefa cup is still the 2nd one to win in the world though.

give the winners of the Uefa cup qualification the the champions league. That would get a few more interested in it. As for the comments about it being a second class comp, its been in place for donkeys years, just look at previous winners and its history. The only supporters who say that are those of the teams in the Champs league, or the Champions league big 2 Manure and L’pool, whilsty Chavski and Ars*nal are just losers. Its like saying the FA Cup is irrelevant, which tends to be said by teams that have been knocked out…funny that. All cups are relevant, from the FA Vase to Campions League, you can’t beat the feeling of winning a cup of any sort. Remember what thats like

It pains me to say it, but it is a second class european competition. It’s like moaning that the Championship is second class to the EPL. All the teams in UEFA cup want to use it as a spring-board into the CL, like Sevilla did.

I do think that ti would have more kudos if the losers from the CL weren’t added half way through.

Make the CL and UEFA straight knock-outs and this may return some of the excitement. All the games before Christmas are pretty worthless. you can usually write up the ending positions before the competition begins.

Having the 3rd place group losers from the CL drop into the Uefa cup at the second stage does nothing to beef up it’s reputation and is only done in the hope that a ‘big name’ will win it.

And I agree with ‘amithras’, that teams still want to be in it regardless as a stepping stone to the CL.

Rebranding is not going to do jack. changing a name does not change it’s being.

Stop allowing 2-3-4place EPL teams from getting into the champ league. why should they get into the champ league, what are they are champ of?
cup winners and EPL winners get into champ league. 2-3-4-5 get into UEFA. as a runners up competition.
