Can you remember the first Match?
By Ian Salisbury
Can you remember the 1st time you saw WHU play live, for me it was at home to Aston Villa, September 1964. We won 3-1, can’t remember who scored, but I think Geoff Hurst did, but I was totally smitten, and since then I’ve stuck with them through thick and thin.
Like all kids I used to try to copy my hero, so I pretended I was Hurstie when I got home and played football with my mates, who did you try to emulate?
What are your memories?

I can vaguely remember going to a game, I suppose it must’ve been about 1982 – 1984. I was 10 – 11 years old. I think we played spurs & won 5-2 or 4-1 – any stato’s out there can confirm. I can remember brooking get one late on & everyone going md … sir trev is still up there for me.

My first game was away at Crystal Palace in 1971. We won 3-0 with goals from Clyde Best, Billy Bonds and Ade Coker (who was making his debut aged just 17)
My first game was at home against Huddersfield in January 1960, FA Cup, (‘old sod’ I hear, but true). I was 9 years old and witnessed the brilliant Denis Law helping the away team to a 5-1(I think) win. During the sixties, of course, we were teaching the world how to do it properly!
My first game was when a was 7years old 16/12/1995, West Ham v Southampton. Won 2-1 i cant remember who sored but i think Dicksy did ! I remember the ball going into the gutter of the old west stand, big laughs and ‘WAYS’ !! I giggled my arse off oh to be young again simple things eh guys ! C’mon you Irons !!!!!!
My first game was 1971 against Arsenal at highbury. We lost 2-1. Can’t remember who scored but remember sir trev comimg on as sub.
The first game I can remember was against Lausanne of Switzerland in the Cup Winners Cup, 1966 maybe ? - yeah, I’m that old !Only a nipper on my dad’s shoulders in the North Bank, but remember we won 4-3 – most vivid memory was Jim Standengetting beaten by an overhead kick !Not sure, but think we lost 2-1 in Switzerland and went out on away goals rule.
My first game was in the promotion season of 1957-8. West Ham beat Rotheram United 8-0 at Upton Park, the scorers being John Dick (4), Vic Keeble (2), and John Smith (2). The team was Gregory, Bond, Cantwell, Malcolm,Brown, Lansdowne, Grice, Smith,Keeble,Dick,Musgrove.
That’s really weird! Â I saw the title of the original post and clicked on it with my first live game in mind, only to find it’s exactly the same game as Ian has mentioned – that 3-1 home win against Villa. Â Yes, I’m sure Hurst did score, but i can’t remember the others. Â Like Ian, that was it for me. Â I also remember at that time Johnny Byrne lived in the same road in Barking as some friends of my parents and he used to play football in the road with us sometimes. Â Can’t really imagine something like that happening today. Mind you, I can’t imagine any West Ham player living in Barking today.
Mine was Southampton away 4th November 1969. 1-1 Brooking diving header(yes the other one) and a Terry Paine equaliser.
Arsenal Away Feb 19th 1978 and we won 3-2
WHUFC Vs BURY 2nd round league cup 83, sitting in old north bank sitting on the railings next to the old burger stand, we won 10-0!!!
My first game was in the 1967/68 season,at home to Leeds United.I think we won 2-1,with Martin Peters scoring the winner.I was a big fan of his after that, and i always wanted to be him when me and my mates would play football.I was heartbroken when he joined Tottenham, and actually started hating Jimmy Greaves, because he came to us in exchange.
In 89 verses Sunderland in the Littlewoods cup, we won 2:1 with goals from David Kelly and Alan Dickens, Marco Gabbiadini replying for Sunderland.
I think it was ‘77-’78 away vs Man City. It was my 9th birthday a few days before and my dad took me. We lived in Cheshire at the time so most of the games I saw as a nipper were vs Man City, Manure, Stoke City, Liverpool, Everton etc. I think we lost 3-2, which sounds good but was pretty dire, in front of a half empty Maine Road. I can remember walking back to the car & the old man chatting to a City fan about how their fans are similar to ours in their dedication – unlike the glory hunters accross the other side of Manchester. So I got the usual banter at school, as I was well know as the only Hammers fan there, from most of the other kids. We got relegated that year but it got much sweeter a couple of seasons later when we won the cup as massive underdogs.
Hudddersfield Town – last day of the 70/71 season! We lost 0-1!
Can’t honestly remember much except Bonzo charging around as ever and Hurst having one cleared off the line in the lastr minute or so!
Happy days!
