Obua Work Permit problem spoils West Ham Move

David Obua arrived at Hearts on Friday in a hope to be signed by his ex coach Laszlo Csaba, after being rejected by West Ham due to Work Permit problems.

After several days of trials with the Hammers squad Obua was hoping to be signed up by the Hammers, but after probable consideration by the legal team at West Ham applying for a work permit would take too long and upset plans that Alan Curbishley has with rebuilding his squad.

The legal requirements for a work permit is as follows:

“Players must have appeared in 75% of their country’s competitive international ‘A’ team fixtures in the previous two years;

Permits will be valid for the length of a player’s contract with the club;

The FIFA ranking of the player’s national side aggregated over 2 years (at or above 70th place) is a basic criterion.”

It is alsmost certain that David Obua would fulfil his part of the requirment, but his permit would be rejected because of the requirement regarding Uganda’s Fifa Ranking is 97th  and not in the top 70, an appeal could be made, but it is highly unlikely to make any difference.

It looks likely that Obua would fulfill the first requirement, but Uganda definitely don’t tick the last box.
