Alan Curbishley: “That would be one hell of a stadium”

Its amazing how just a few words can bring some relief into what seems to be a miserable transfer window.

Curbishley’s interview with Rob Pritchard from EchoSport gives us fans some food for thought.

When Rob asked him about the plans for a new Stadium Curbs replied

I look at Upton Park and just wonder that improving it – making it a wrap-around stadium – is possible. That would be one hell of a stadium.

There’s a couple of opportunities, although I can’t really put a screw and bolt on that.

I cant imagine any Hammers that would not be happy with staying at Upton Park.

1 other thing that intrigued me with his comments was when Rob asked him about BG and his reaction to how West Ham are doing in the Premier League, Curbs Replied:

(Former chairman) Eggert Magnusson was more bullish and up front, but BG is the opposite. He is quite laid back on those sorts of things.

What he wants to see is the team playing well, decent performances and we will take it from there.

Obviously everyone wants to be successful, but he doesn’t show it in the same way as Eggert.

We speak every week, obviously he is in a different position to Eggert who was able to base himself here and was very hands on, but Scott Duxbury and BG are in regular contact.

He came out to Canada and spent three or four days with us.

He is different from Eggert but no less passionate.

Eggert was passionate and he showed it every time we scored, BG just grins, but then Eggert was so passionate he sold his shares to BG for some strange reason, which made me think, Is it not good to have an investment in West Ham? well i guess he just wanted to retire and lay on the beach in Miami.

Dont be too laid back though BG, West Ham supporters are not a very forgiving bunch, history will tell you that.

Eggert didn’t leave through choice. From my understanding he was blamed for the huge wages wasted on Ljungberg, Dyer, Neill etc. It was thought he was not as carefull with sanctioning these signings as perhaps he ought to have been.

why wasn’t he asked to justify his selection of boa morte when it couldn’t be more obvious that the fans are fed up with him for that.

Who REALLY knows what goes on behind the closed doors of the boardroom. We can only speculate. I don’t, however, subscribe to the idea that Eggert Magnusson got out of the club because he thought it wasn’t the best place to have his cash invested in. BG is no mug. I like his “Laid back” style and the way he conducts himself with dignity and decorum. It’s clear he’s not going to simply throw money at the club. He has a, stated, strategic approach over a longer term to develop youth talent, without the Terrence Brown “Cash ‘em in” tactics, and gradually integrate those players into a strong, developing, first team squad that can challenge for honours.

I don’t expect to see many changes in the management team at West Ham for quite some time. BG doesn’t appear to be the type to give in to Fan or Media pressure to do anything – least of all adopt a hire and fire method of staffing.

As for the stadium – yes – The Boleyn Ground would be awsome if they could carry out the original plans to develop to 42,500 by bringing the East stand forward and moving the pitch closer to the West Stand. It’s the “Academy of Football,” and should remain so. The atmosphere wasn’t quite the same after they moved the pitch away from the old “Chicken Run.” I’d personally love it if it was tight to the touchline again.

Oh yes please. Tight round the pitch again. Cram ‘em in. Wall of noise. Hostile. Magnificent. Proud. Claret and Blue. With a Chairman worthy of the club instead of the disgraceful rogue and his cronies. Real honest players. Dont retire Bobbys shirt… give every lad in the youth set up the ambition to wear it one day. Talk about it in hallowed terms and wrap new rules round it… if youve ever had a red card you cant wear the No. 6 for example. Paragons of every virtue of the game. Noone can be Bobby Moore, but he can be used to set a standard for behaviour. In a season when the FA are attempting, in their usual half witted half arsed way, to drive “respect” surely this is a way ahead. Retiring the shirt… what is that all about????

  • Keep umpton park, but out with with Curbs and his”friend” LBM.

Changing the mood a little, nearly every site I read talks about a need for another striker at West Ham, and I completely agree. Bellamy and Ashton will be fantastic but the likelyhood of staying fit is low. Sears will come on but it takes time. Cole is simply not good enough. Therefore we need to add in this department. The problem for me is who?. I have come up with 2 potentials but please add more and perhaps the news will filter through.
Option 1, if we are really to move forward this year we need to spend big, every striker around seems to have inflated prices, keane 20M, Johnson 10M and even Zamora 5m seem outrageous. therefore Kuyt at 16M from Liverpool seems a genuine bargain. he can play on the wing and upfront, has no record of injury, is pacy and strong with good international and champions league expereince. rather than waste 4 or 5 million on 2-4 players why not invest in 1 decent one.
Second choice and more likely is a cheaky offer for Milito, he has a good scoring record in an average Spanish side that has just been relegated. OK his 29 but for 4-5 M on a 3 year contract we may see the best of him, again no record of injuries and puts himself about
Please someone come up with some alternatives beyond Goodjohnson and Bent who have both made it very clear they do not want to join.

What are you all on about ‘keep Upton Park’?!?!?!? The place is a dump, always has been, the local infrastructure around the ground is pathetic and the local culture couldn’t give a fig about WHUFC. Move the ground closer to West Ham proper, build a 50,000 stadium in place with infrastructure to host big games, consult the Police and accommodate parking.
