Curbishley Resigns as West Ham Manager 28-August-2008
Could that be the headline we will all see on Thursday morning, after we play Macclesfield on Weds Night?
A defeat against Macclesfield could prove to be the final straw for AJ and anyone who doubts that are surely as deluded as he is.
The board, the West Ham fans and the Press will expect nothing else but a victory even if it is only by 1 goal, the same 3 sets of people will also be prepared for the worst as Journalists sit at their desks and the fans will want blood, the board will have to give in and release Curbs from his nightmare of trying to run a premier league football team.
Every one of us deep down has wanted Curbs to succeed and even at our own expenses have travelled to games fit for comedy acts, if we lose against Macclesfield on Weds night and Curbs is still in power, I can definitely say i will not attend any more away games until he is removed.
BG is no angel, the club gained £47.75m in value since last year and that is a 25% increase in value, we are now the 22nd richest football club in the world, but play like the 22nd from poorest, where is the Money BG?.
A temporary stay of execution will be almost certain from a win against Macclesfield, so why prolong your fait Alan, go why we still can forgive you.

I totally agree what you have said. I haven’t been to a game for nearly 2 years now, Curbs is a waste of space, the players don’t understand his (curbs) tactics, which we all saw on TV. Curbs wanted a 0-0 from the first whilst, clueless curbs has to go now! Bye, bye curbs, do us all a favour, go now!
Oh do shut up you moron
absolutely crap.
Â
Â
why sack a manager after just 2 games. curbs is a solid manager, woho already doesn’t have that amount of money to strengthen that decent squad, which is hit by injuries all the time.
Â
Â
i dont think that someone else, like f.e. bilic could change something
Well said boss, oops I mean Curbs
1st thing,Curbs will never resign, would you and lose mega money payoff? Marc, not been for nearly 2 years? proper supporter then!waiting for bit of glory or success, follow Man U with rest of armchair fans then,as ya dont go you wont be missed.I go every game, home and away good and bad so my opinion counts for bit more than yours(paid my money, often wasted my time etc) and i totally agree with Col
I can see col and bern eating their words soon, Curbs is a complete ass like you 2, i havent missed a match in 15 years and i am not stupid enough to think the only West Ham supporters are the ones who attend matches, people buy shirts and other supportive goods each year, so they do have the right to say . GET CURBS OUT NOW.
bern,you twonk!!!!
I pray you’re right. Please sack him! We’re so boring to watch with him in charge, get a new exciting manager!
For the first time in several weeks i actually feel positive about the future. We all know that certain players were bought when quality was needed but we could not attract them. instead we invested in players who could save us from relegation albeit at high salaries. There was not a great deal of choice at the time as any self respecting professional of quality was not going to join a club that appeared relegated.OK so not all have worked out and we have been unlucky with injuries, all players were fit when signed and whilst you can say they had a history of injury, there was, I suspect ,little choice. I also agree that perhaps Curbs is not the best man manger or tactically superior coach but again what choices at the time were there. he saved us from relegation and 10th place last year. the tactics at the sart of the season saved us, I just don’t believe that all of a sudden he has lost the plot of tactics i believe it has more to do with unsettled dressing room, constantly changing team and most importantly players simply not being good enough.( i am not saying his perfect but I cant see anyone doing a much better job without a significant investment in funds which we are all aware this is not likely to happen.)So why am i positive, I believe getting rid of Lungberg was a good move, a pre madonna in the changing room who only played well when it suited, on high wages casuing bad feeling was not good for WHU. Pantsil and Zamora if we are honest were not taking us forward so good they have gone although I liked both and couldnt fault the effort. I read this morning that Cole may be on the way out as well,Hamburg and Sunderalnd, another good move as he is not good enough. I am still hopeful that a couple more will leave but these departures have created an opportunity for some of the young talent we have and that had to happen. ferdinand was given several years and to be honest never proved outstanding, just because he came from the academy does not mean we have to keep him or are selling our best young talent. Quite the oposite, he goes and we get very good money for him, this creates an opportunity for someone who may prove to be more consistent. Sunderalnd as not a Champions league team and appear to of been the only ones interested so lets not get carried away with how good he is.We do need some replacements and hopefully they will arrive but who????, I just think that there is a void of decent options available. maybe Sears and Hines will step up and given we are short they will have the opportunity that if we buy someone else they will miss out on.And finally i am positive because it is now apparent that Nani was brought in to shape the team not Curbs, he is now deciding on who we buy and letting Curbs get on with the day to day stuff. this releives all the pressure and we hope, he, Nani has a good eye for talent. To make the week perfect i would love Neils contract negotiations to break down and leave at the death making it a happier place for all.I even have a sneaky suspicion that we will finally see LBM at his best if given a chance and i never thought I would say that.  Most important, the players must also read all this and why i believe we should be allowed to voice our concerns lets start being a little positive. just imagine being a Spurs fan, they have spent 100million and are shit again. Â
What a load of rubbish. Let’s look at the facts. Curbishley was appointed when the club were facing relegation, his remit was to firstly keep us up – he succeeded. His next target was to push up the league – he succeeded. His aim this year was to go for top 6/7 finish – To say this won’t happen after 2 games is nothing short of pathetic, the sort of fickleness that would be seen at white hart lane but never here. Let’s just say for one minute that the TWONKS get their way and Curbishley goes – who do we get to replace him. It shows the level of delusion of fans when you hear names like Bilic or Maldini, even redknapp banded about – ask yourself, why would anyone of any worth choose a club that have no european football, have a board that undermine their manager, have no money to spend and a bunch of fans that will start calling for his head if he doesn’t win his frst game 7-0 with fast free flowing football. For the sake of the club Curbishley has to stay until January at the very least.
We all know why there is a lack of transfer activity. Any chairman knows they wont be able to attract a top class manager without being able to give them funds for transfers - the bigger the fund the better the manager we’ll attract. Maybe he is just waiting for the inevitable to happen and curbs to fail so they can get Bilic et al to come abroad with 20mill or so to buy a few top players. We need a right back, a creative midfielder and striker IMO
I’d rather see the headline “Hammers through to the next round”.
Above all, as all West Ham fans should, I want to see the team win.
Curbishley is seriously at fault. The man has clearly lost the respect of the players (if he ever had any in the first place) the display on Sunday highlighted this so clearly.
Yes he is a nice bloke, yes he is West Ham through and through, but this does not make him the right man to manage a club of this stature with its history of flair and passionate football.
Â
Combined with the fact that he has made our club captain – Lucas Neill, a man who is not even half the player he was a few years ago, (he has no pace whatsoever and looks out of his depth against even the most mediocre of opposition).
Â
The problem our manager now has, is he won’t drop his captain, maybe for fear of destroying team morale, but in doing so he is merely showing how weak he is, Lucas Neil is NOT a premiership player at the moment, having watched his performances in person month after month this fact is blatantly obvious, caught out of position, diabolical passing and total lack of pace.
Â
The match on Sunday was embarrassing, its not been since the days of Glenn Roeder that I remember a team putting on the claret and blue and actually looking disinterested from the start, the tactics are completely wrong, Curbs waits an eternity to alter any formations and or make substitutions during games –its as if he has set out a game plan prior to the match but if things are not going his way, he cannot or will not change it quick enough:
Â
Be honest, how many times have we all sat up in the stands and watched us losing a grip on a match, looking over at curbs and the numerous players warming up, WILLING him to make a change, to freshen the team up, to at least TRY and change the pattern of the game. BUT he never does, he sits there, Mervyn Day, the only one showing passion, (It is almost reminiscent of Glenn Roeder, standing cross armed, watching on from the sidelines).
Â
We as fans do not expect to win every game, we just want passion, its not a lot to ask, passion, determination, players pulling in the same direction trying to get a result for their manager and their fans.
Â
I along with thousands of other bemused West Ham fans will be at the match tomorrow against Macclesfield and I honestly feel this is one match we could lose – however, in doing so, I hope that it is the end of the Curbs’ reign; as we need to get a new, passionate and respected man in before its too late and the season is over, slowly grinding to a halt and the boring boring West Ham we are becoming – the board cannot leave it until Christmas to bite the bullet and get someone else in, we need to be proactive and take a hold of things, get in a proper manager with proven credentials.
Â
I was a staunch supporter of Curbs before he was made manager and supported him through a hell of a lot of games after; its purely down to the style we play now, the way the team lines up and conducts itself on the pitch, all around the Boleyn on match day there is negativity, this is not how it should be, Curbs has been given a chance, its not just about this season, all two games of it, it was the second half of last season, match after match, a total lack of fight and tactical aptitude. Yes he kept us up, but I truly believe this is all he is capable of, he is not the man to take us to the next level, a top ten finish is beyond him, how many of you out there genuinely believe he can turn us into a top six team?

@Col Well done for such a contribution to this post, I can tell you are a person with floods of knowledge about west ham. I write for 1 of the best daily newspapers in the UK and I dare say a few of you might know my name, I have supported west ham all of my life, and have read most blogs about west ham, I remember KUMB’s early days when they was a blog and now they try to compete with major news media which made me lose interest in them, This blog might not be the best around but it does share many supporters thoughts and then debates, so keep up the good work and do not turn into KUMB.As for the headline, well you are right, that headline is ready and waiting to be printed on Thursday morning, we do not want to lose against Macclesfield but the humiliation will be too much for me and far too many fans to want to keep Curbs as manager, to be honest i cant see the guy lasting past August anyway, good blog and keep the interesting posts coming even if the bigger blogs hate it. you obviously must be doing something right as you are getting 120,000 hits a month according to your analytics results.
Anyone who is a hardcore west ham fan who pays 1k+ for him and his son every year to watch the sh*t curbs puts out and his terrible tactics will admit even though we’ve only had two games, hes not going to push us forward, he cant attract players and wastes money on players getting paid to be injured 24/7
Oh dear, two games and we hit the panic button, one win and one loss! I do believe that some of us are turning into the kind of fans normally you would find at white fart lane! Whatever you think of Curbishley, he has done all that was required in his first one and a half seasons. He has to be given this season to see where we are at the end! Let’s not be to downbeat about what Curbishley has done, he is taking the flack when we really should be asking the new owners about where the transfer kitty has gone? All I seem to be hearing from the board is about cutting costs, since they took over we have not spent a huge net outlay due to players sold. The cheif exec has told us that no player is on over 56k a week. So how is our costs that much more then any other premiership team that finishes mid-table? Where is their ambition to finish top six?Maybe its time we start asking questions like these rather then keep blaming the manager, who has done everything that has been asked, dispite the unlucky run of injuries he has had to cope with! The only gripe I have with Curbishley at this time is the style in which the team has played, although it’s no worse then under Pardew. Saying that, if he could put his first choice eleven out on a Saturday, I am sure he would tell you that would be alot different. It’s about time we got behind the team and Curbishley and start questioning the board if questions need to be asked. Turning on the manager after two game isn’t going to help results!C.O.Y.I!!!!!!!
@Martin Samuels: do you write with the same punctation and grammar in the newspapers?
@Ben of course that’s why we have editors!! and i noticed how well your punctuation is spelt.
lol, busted!
Martin, you wrote an article, must be over a year ago and mentioned an Ipswich town supporting teacher at Ilford County High School – was his name Mr Elvin? I feel very sorry for Curbishley and have done over the last year. He’s never really been accepted by the fans, sorry customers as they basically are now and it would take an exceptional run of results to turn that around. In his favour, is the fact that Pardew was pretty unpopular but turned it around, but unfortunately for AC, he is not a rentaquote like Pardew or Redknapp which somehow means he isn’t a good manager. Still it could be worse, we could be playing against a side managed by an ex-hammer with everything to prove on Saturday. Doh! Hope my spelling is ok.
@ brooking still the best:
There is NO hitting of the panic button, merely comments on Alan Curbishley’s lack of technical ability and commanding of the team affairs. It has been clear for all who regularly attend matches to see, that on each and every occasion that things have turned against us on the pitch or things are not going to plan, Curbs finds it impossible to act in a decisive way, being proactive or indeed reactive to what is happening there and then.
This proves he is not the right man and is out of his depth, your perceived worry that some fans are turning in Tottenham style fans is laughable, people are merely voicing their opinions and more importantly, also voting with their feet as was massively noticeable in the opening game against Wigan, with 4000 odd seats empty and an atmosphere in the stadium well below par.
People are not panicking after two matches, it is actually after last season and the 2 games this season combined; the fact that nothing has changed, the same negative team formations and playing style, seemingly playing for draws or even worse, trying to minimise the amount of goals we lose by !
The players looked totally disinterested against Man City, something which was reminiscent of the latter part of Pardews reign….. now that’s something to think about, we all know what happened there.
Who on here truly believes that Curbishley can lead west ham to challenge for major honours?
The man lacks any passion during pre and post match interviews and the matches themselves.
Â
The point is Brooking is that Curbishley won’t be able to put his first eleven out there because he picked these crocks to join the squad. I supported Curbs, but I’m losing faith, because I truly believed he might be able to turn things up this season. And no this is not about a knee jerk reaction after just two games, it’s the reminiscent style of football that has worked it’s way over from the ending of last season into the beginning of this one. The backbone of the team is the manager, and I’m starting to belive AC hasn’t got one.
I think this ever recurring argument between pro and anti Curbites amongst the West Ham faithful boils down to those pro-Curbs that believe he deserves a season or half a season having keept his promises of keeping us up and then top ten, and the anti-Curbs who do not think he should be given that chance because he cannot take the club forward and has no pedigree for playing attractive football. This makes obvious sense as its the ‘we don’t mind losing as long as we played well’ argument versus the ‘we didnt play well but still got the three points’ argument. I would tend to favour the pro-Curbs attitude purely because I believe one of the proudest things about being a Hammer is that we do stick by our own until the final straw is parting company- it is obvious we are a very long way from being a club in crisis or Curbs being in an untenable position. The thing that worries me the most is that the board are the ones undermining the manager and ultimately the club- what sort of manager will that attract if/ when Curbs does go?? IRONS
What about playing well and getting some results. As for who would be the next manager, this may well come down to someone Nani has connections with. If results continue like at Man City then we will be a club in crisis.
Citizen79, you have summed it up in a nutshell, good points on the last season and these opening two games. I would love AC to turn things round and prove us all wrong…but I fear that is not going to happen.
We haven’t really played good attacking football since Dean Ashton came in. Think back to the way attacks were made along the left flank, all one and two touch stuff from Konkeshky (yes even him) at the back, fast and on the floor to Mullins or Noble and out to the whippet that WAS Etherington and then towards Harewood and Bobby Z. Fast two touch football that sythes through defences, for oldies out there remember the way that Brooking and Devonshire used to come down that side.Since Dean came in the whole style of play was changed to suit his way of playing and inevitably this often meant playing up to him more directly. Playing the ball up to a front man just gives it away. This change in style has it seems caused Etherington to become absolutely ineffective. He cannot beat the defender and normally receives a ball and either tries a cross which deflects or gives it back to the passer as a hospital ball. Basically he only has one foot and he seems scared of using that now and comes inside so we lose any width. The alternative LBM is not even worth analysing he seems totally inept. This has caused McCartney problems as he comes forward and gets let down by his front man. Ask Sunderland supporters how good a partnership Arca and McCartney were and he could be again with decent skills in front of him to overlap with.Yes Ashton is a good front man, but he is not an Adebeyor or Torres as he doesn’t possess either the skill or speed. He is not our messiah, perhaps Bellamy will be if he can stay fit enough.Lucas Neil is not a good full back and makes too many rash challenges which have cost us dear. Blame Curbishley for not getting a decent left sided player and a new right back back assuming he has a free hand and the finance in place. If he doesn’t and the board are going to balance the books first then what can he or any other newby do?
I am a season ticket holder for the past 16 years, so Citizen 79, to suguest I don’t see, hear or know what’s going on is a tad insulting. Oh well, I’ll get over it. ha ha. I don’t totally disagree with anything you or anyone has said but this is a start of a new season, I’m trying to stay positive!
Yeah, so far Curbishleys style of football is dull, my only point is that he has done everything that was in his remit over the past season and half, dispite a crippling injury list. You can’t blame Ashtons broken ankle or Dyers double leg break on being injury prone. Yeah, you can lable other players on being injury prone but saying all that, we have been very unlucky on that front.I just feel, that Curbishley should be given a fair chance to prove he can inprove the team in both results and style given that he has done so far, all he was asked to do. Maybe if the board had replaced him in the summer, I also would have been happy but they didn’t. As being known as the once most loyal fans in the country, we should now get behind him and the team. Is there anyone on this blog that doesn’t want to see the team do well this season? All this dispair so early in the season cant be helping the team or the situation
Too right Brooking, agree to varying degrees with everything in this thread and it is our right to give opinions on our beloved west ham BUT when three o’clock on saturday (barring sky p**sing about with the fixture list) comes we have to be behind our boys- like we were on Sunday (superb effort, esp the conga!!)
I don’t agree with the booing and do agree we should get behind the team and manager. In fact many fans did get in good voice on Saturday, but unfortunatley it didn’t have much effect on the performance. The question is not that we should not get behind the manager,it’s just that how long should we get behind him. We can’t wait til christmas, because it will be too late by then, and I for one do not want our beloved club in yet another struggle.
Correction I meant sunday in that last comment.
