Wage reduction for Sick Notes

It is sometimes inevitable that a player gets injured in the course of his duty playing for his club and a long term injury to a player can damage a clubs standings in its league, this is why new clauses may come into players contracts when signing for  team.

For instance Dean Ashton, Craig Bellamy, Kieron Dyer, all 3 have spent many months out injured and in some cases they are old injuries from their past clubs coming back to haunt them.

The SPL board wishes to place injured stars on a reduced wage for a set period of time, and, should they still be unavailable once that has elapsed, they will
find themselves on sick pay rather than their full weekly wage which is
what currently happens.

Sick Pay is common for the likes of us in the public that feign illness or injury even if this happens whilst working, so why should it not be common for players.

Brining this clause into a contract will obviously have the players union ranting and raving but it will save clubs probably millions each year and also give the club the option of brining in another player to temporary fill the injured players place.

In the case of Dean Ashton, i feel we are pretty well covered but what happens if Cole falls ill or gets injured?

In the case of Craig Bellamy who without doubt is great player but is getting very close to be playing more games for wales than he has for West Ham United.

Kieron Dyer another good player and i am sure is raring to get back to full time football and when he does it will take another good few months to gain his confidence back as it did with Ashton.

its fair enough, why should they be paid the same if theyre not even playing. Also, what is happening with Danny Gabbidon. Ive heard nothing at all and all of a sudden he’s abut to be picked for the Wales side. Surely he should play for us before he even considers playing for Wales.

If they get injured playing or training for the team then I think it is fair enough that they get full pay. I would be looking for full compensation from my employer if I got sick or injured whilst working. If they get injured playing for their national team, then I think the national association should pick up the tab too.
If they get pay cuts whilst injured, I can see them sueing the player that injured them if it is a conspicuous foul. I don’t think we want to see football go that way.

Could open a can of worms with regard to lawsuits….Let’s say a new manager comes in with new coaches and starts a different regime (for instance) and in you first ‘new style’ training session a player gets injured - who’s to blame?  The player? The coach?  The club?Us ‘mere folk’ have access to those ‘claim agencies’ - you know the ones, had an accident, not able to work….where we can recover loss of income.I can see the ad on sky sports news now “Injured as a result of a bad tackle?, Not able to play football, call claims on…..”Let’s be realistic, this aint gonna happen.

Then to the tricky question of who is responsible for the sick leave? Is the footballer the one at fault for getting injured? Or is it perhaps the medical staff that told him and the club that he was fit to play (when he actually wasn’t), or is it the club that provided him with an inferior medical staff, training facilities and rehab possibilities? Can you imagine the legal consequences this will have if we would take away a players pay when he suffers something so intimately connected with his job as a footballer as an injury? We will spend more time following transcripts from courts than on the game itself.

I pretty much agree, if you get injured playing you should still receive full pay, however we do seem to have a few players that suffer from this regulary. Unfortunately the main sport here in Aus is Rugby league, although i am not a massive fan I do watch most weeks and am suprised given the tough tackling how few injuries there seems to be compared with the soccer players. Any player with Hamstring is not bad luck but poor planning and fitness regime. Hamstrings normally go because muscles are not warmed correctly so this should never happen but seems to with bellamy all the time. Seperate issue, whats happenning with Appiah? anyone know and yes none of the welsh boys should be allowed to pla until fully fit and appearing for WHU. If bellamy and Collins get injured again we do not have the financial muscle to replace, I can see us finishing the season with Sears as our main striker which may not be all bad.

I am done with Ashton….This may not par for this blog but I am pissed beyond all reasonable doubt - I do not believe he will play for WH again. I think Capello had him booked correctly when he said he was overweight, I think that has hinderedhis rehab from last years injury…SOme times you have to learn when to cut bait - bye bye Deano, its been fun while it lasted.
