West Ham v Wigan - Like New Signings!

Alan Curbishley will be feeling the presure today as the West Ham start their season opener against Wigan

Curbishley and Manchester City’s Mark Hughes are the favourites in the Premier League sack-race, with Curbishley’s position coming under scrutiny amid financial uncertainty at Upton Park.

The Hammers’ board expected more than a 10th-placed finish last season after Curbishley splashed out £22.5million on Craig Bellamy, Kieron Dyer, Julien Faubert and Freddie Ljungberg last summer.

But captain Lucas Neill has urged for patience from the West Ham board given the injury woes that hampered their hopes of a European push last term.

“I think he’s been a victim of a board that’s come in, given him a lot of money and wanted success immediately,” said Neill.

“Time stood still for us for a year because everyone we tried to bring in, in terms of knowledge and experience, was injured. That’s not his fault.

“I think he’s got to be judged on what happens from now. You can’t just buy success in one season, it takes time.

“Somebody’s got to be the favourite to get the sack first and unfortunately it’s him because of the demand at West Ham for success.

“But the odds on him going will soon change if we stick two or three quick wins together.

“There’s a determination to go where we wanted to go last season before it went wrong,” he added.

“You want your biggest weapons out there because you know at any stage of the game Kieron Dyer or Craig Bellamy’s pace could get you a goal.

“I think there’s been less activity in the market this summer because we’re yet to see our transfers from last year play their part.

“Having them back, alongside Dean Ashton and Scott Parker, will be like new signings.”

Bellamy will miss the first month of

Gianluca Nani a man on a Mission to make West Ham one the Worlds greatest Teams

A fantastic article in the Basildon Echo, with Gianluca Nani in an interview.

The article reads:

GIANLUCA Nani is a man with a mission.

He wants to turn West Ham United into one of Europe’s top clubs, both on and off the pitch.

To fulfil his aims, the Irons’ new Italian technical director plans
to overhaul everything from the club’s playing staff to its medical and
training facilities.

THEY same Rome was not built in a day.

It is perhaps ironic, then, that Roman Gianluca Nani says that the new West Ham United will not be built in a day.

The 45-year-old arrived from Serie A side Brescia in June with the
remit of transforming the Hammers from a traditional English club to
one at the forefront of European and world football.

To do so, the former law student stated his case for an almost
complete overhaul of the club’s scouting, transfer, training and
medical facilities.

Nani has a dream of attracting the cream of the world’s best young talent to Upton Park before turning them into superstars.

The Italian’s job, he admitted, is a “great gamble”, but Nani is prepared to roll the dice.

“It’s fantastic to be at West Ham. It’s really nice. It’s a really great gamble,” he told the Echo.

“I’m really concentrated because now we are working hard for the transfer market and we try to build a better team.

“We are taking care of the financial side too and we think that West Ham could be a really good team.

“First of all, we are trying to build a team around the squad.”

Since his arrival, Nani’s influence has already been felt in the transfer market.

Valon Behrami arrived from Lazio for £5million at his own personal recommendation.

“Behrami can be one of the top players in the Premier League within
two-or-three years. He has everything needed to be successful in
England,” Nani enthused.

Meanwhile, Bobby Zamora, John Pantsil and Freddie Ljungberg - in
controversial circumstances - have all left the Boleyn Ground since his
arrival.

“Freddie will try a new experience abroad and we let him go,” Nani,
who took part in the negotiation of the Swede’s release from his
three-year contract after just a single season, explained.

“He was available for transfer. He played a lot of years in England
and played for the best team in England and played in Europe.

“He would like to do a new thing and so in respect of him and his career, without any fighting we let him go.”

Despite the ins and outs, many West Ham supporters have been disappointed with the lack of action in the transfer market.

Nani, however, insisted his work in the summer transfer window was not yet done.

“It has not been a frustrating summer at all,” he said.

“I know my job and that is to keep the best players from last season find the best players to add to the squad.

“I’m working hard trying to be ready, when we have the chance, to bring in the best players.

“But, the market could change at any time and you have to be ready to take that opportunity to get the better players.

“Some players could go, while some others could come – you have to be ready at any time.”

Nani made his name by bringing in unproven talent and reviving seemingly spent careers during his nine-year spell at Brescia.

Among those to benefit were Italian World Cup winners Luca Toni and
Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Baggio, Spanish midfielder Josip Guardiola,
Brazilian Matuzalem and Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah.

The technical director wants to build a similarly successful operation in the East End, but it will not happen overnight.

“My plan to build our organisation by finding the best European and
South American players from around the world, we need time,” he said.

“I think we are not finished with the market.

“The balance should be looked at at the end of the market and the real balance will be shown at the end of the season.”

What is clear is that Nani and his scouting network will scour the
world for “the next Cristiano Ronaldo”, with Icelandic teenager Holmar
Orn Eyjolfsson already at the club and skilful Hungarian forward Balint
Bajner on trial.

For now, however, Nani is content with the strength of the Irons’
first team squad and believes the club can enjoy a positive season in
the Premier League.

“Last season, we had some players who were injured, but all of them are coming back,” he added.

“We have a very good medical department and have bought a very
important player in Valon Behrami. We are really following our plan.

“I think we are working the right way. We know we have Craig
Bellamy and Julien Faubert coming back and Kieron Dyer is very close to
coming back again.

“So, I think we can have a good season.”

Can we trust Curbishley’s Decisions?

Its hard to keep off the topic of Alan Curbishley when it seems day by day more of the West Ham fans are losing faith in him.

One of the co-Authors of this blog was a staunch Curbs fan only a month ago, but even he (Dave Hall) is losing faith.

We now read that the co-owner of West Ham is furious that Freddie Ljungberg has been released with a nice going away deal, this co-owner supposedly told the Sun it was Curbs fault that Ljungberg was hired, and Curbs denied this saying that Eggert did the buying and all Curbs does is the recommending, Well that says it all, if Curbs recommended Ljungberg than Eggert would have done all he could to get Ljungberg, to which he did at a costly sum.

Now we all know why Eggert left the club, it was assumed BG was furious with eggert over the Ljungberg deal and cost to the club, hence he was paid off for his shares and sent packing, should the same happen to Curbishley?

Ljungberg: Arsenal are my past, West Ham is my Future!

Freddie Ljungberg would never say a bad word about his old team Arsenal, and every Hammers knows that, Russian newspapers stating that he slated Wenger was a load of Bollox to sell newspapers and and cause media hype, and the rubbish story did what it was meant to do.

But i am seriously impressed with Ljungberg of late, and especially his response to the sad Russian media, his response was

“I haven’t done an interview with this Russian newspaper and none of the quotes have any substance, I certainly didn’t make those comments.”

His agent said

“His move to West Ham was inspired by the vision for the club and the strong interest from Alan Curbishley.
“The suggestion that Freddie left Arsenal in order to stay in the Premiership and play against them is not only utter rubbish but is a complete falsehood.”

Now i am not a great lover of Wenger or Arsenal, but he is a

Ljungberg guaranteed another Season

Freddie Ljungberg has been guaranteed another season at West Ham by the Big Wigs.

Midway through the season Ljungberg has changed many factors that led to his poor performances during the early part of 07/08.

Ljungberg has recently been showing his old Arsenal form since taking on new training schedules and a new diet, he told the Mirror:

“I feel great. I changed my training schedule and my diet midway through the season and since then I haven’t had any problems. I wasn’t eating enough carbs so I didn’t have enough energy in my muscles. There were loads of things. But the trainer I had changed the whole thing and it has worked.

“Before then it stop-start, stop-start with injuries and being in and out of the team. So it was hard to get consistency.

“First, I wasn’t that fit and then I felt I hadn’t played as well as I can play. But now I feel in great shape, I scored in my last game and I am really looking forward to next season.”

The Hammers board would be mad to get rid of Ljungberg, he is capable of scoring
