Get yer seat belts on!
By Ian Salisbury
With the season just about to start, I think a clear view is all important!
At the end of last season we highlighted a number of areas where we had weaknesses, and now with the start on Saturday, very few of these have been addressed. We face the new season with most of the average players we had last season. When you consider the team that was put out against Villareal, you would have to assume that this would be your starting line up, so has Davenport suddenly become a winner, a player that we were looking to get rid of just months before? Has Carlton Cole over the Summer suddenly found the form that he lacked so obviously last season? What has happened through the Summer to bring us to this point, when we as supporters looked forward to the close season with excitement at the probability of new and better players coming in, and the ‘also rans’ going out. My strong suspicion is what I have been saying for some time, that BG has very little time for WHU, the investment was made on the back of Eggert’s enthusiasm and when the investors realised what he had committed to, they quickly forced his hand to resign. Mistakes were made, we must admit that, we have been down the path of high earners before, and come off badly for it, but wouldn’t you expect a billionaire to realise that a Premier Club is a drain on resources, it is only after a lot of investment and time that benefits can be realised, and these might not be financial. Personally I wish he would sell up to someone with more of a ‘hands on approach’ surely we as WHU supporters deserve that after all the years of mediocrity, we are without doubt the best supporters in the land, sticking to our team through thick and thin, and there’s been a lot of thin. Yet the crowds have hardly waned, it is on this loyalty that successive boards have traded.
I hoped for a change of manager, I know a number of readers of this site say that AC should be given a chance, he has done as much as he is capable of, if that’s what you want at WHU then I am sorry but it shows a complete lack of ambition. It’s all very well to say if he had the players he would do better, give him a chance, but I am not the only one to lament at the woeful performances of our team last season. I for one do not want to see that week after week. It seems to me that he fits very much within the constrained mould that the present board have set for him, where there is going to be little investment, and he has to make the ‘most of what he’s got’ another season that promises much and delivers little.
So what have we got to look forward to, Deano battling his heart out up front with Cole and the introduction of Freddie when this Read more Get yer seat belts on!
